FSC-certified Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB set the scene in an office interior geared towards the ‘new way of working’ in Swung House in The Hague. The carbon-neutral building offers flexible work space solutions for home-based business owners and independent professionals. Interior architect Odette Ex decided to break away from a traditional office design and opted for a stark and striking loft-style interior with a contemporary look.
The custom-designed furniture and fittings in Swung House are made from a combination of Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB, creating a unique look. The ColorVlok OSB (oriented strand board) used for the structural construction is treated with a special coating that gives the original natural appearance of the OSB a lovely texture. Drawer fronts and doors are made of smooth and sleek Medite Ecologique with an opaque finish. The homogenous structure of Medite MDF makes it very stable and provides a solid hold for handles, hinges and locks.
The new way of working
Swung House is situated in an impressive high-profile location. The multi-tenant office building offers professional and inspiring flexible work space solutions that can be rented (on demand, by the hour or by the half day) by home-based business owners and independent professionals who want to maintain their networks and client relationships. Odette Ex was involved right from the start in developing a concept for an interior that would enable the ‘new way of working’. Swung House manager Jean-Marc Verhoeven: “The users of the building may not be formally associated with each other but they have the feeling that they are part of a dynamic, inspiring and thriving business.”
Custom-designed furniture and fittings
The custom-designed MDF and OSB furniture and fittings in Swung House include a large reception desk in the lobby, postboxes and a pantry on the ground floor, metres of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves on the first floor and low partition walls that separate the workstations on the first and second floors. With an eye for detail, the interior architect devotes meticulous attention to the level of finish of the interior. “The edges of the OSB skeleton of the custom-designed cabinets with doors are finished with a strip of matching film, but the edges of the open cabinets with shelves are not finished. This approach enabled us to ensure that the project stayed within budget without having to compromise on quality.”
As Jean-Marc Verhoeven explains, sustainability was the guiding principle in the implementation of the project: “We are delighted that the Swung House concept won the Telework Aspect Award and was awarded 5 stars in the Good & Green Guide The Hague. Our efforts to help create a better world, a sustainable and environmentally responsible society, also as far as working is concerned, have been rewarded.”
Odette Ex prefers to choose sustainable and eco-friendly solutions. “Spatiality and harmony are essential elements in my designs, while the details determine the coherence of the overall look.”The two panel products used to construct the custom-designed furniture and fittings are both made by Coillte Panel Products using wood obtained from sustainably managed and FSC-certified forests owned by Coillte. Both types of panels come with an FSC certificate and are made with zero added formaldehyde.
Odette Ex says the ‘new thinking on sustainability’ definitely influenced the process of developing a concept for the ‘new way of working’, and Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB are very much part of this picture.
