Specifier Review

Residents of Selby, West Yorkshire look forward to a future of state-of-the-art healthcare, thanks to a joint project between the NHS and Selby District Council to deliver a new combined community hospital and civic centre.

Significant sustainability measures were taken into account throughout the project including aluminium systems from Reynaers, natural ventilation, a combined heat and power unit and photovoltaic cells on the roof. Collectively these helped secure a BREEAM Excellent rating for the building.

As well as the new Selby War Memorial Hospital, the site now houses the council chambers and administration offices where the original 1920s hospital o nce stood. The modern hospital offers a range of up to date health facilities including: 24 in-patient beds, minor injuries unit, mental health services, children’s and adolescent services, counselling, various therapies such as physiotherapy and chiropody, as well as palliative care. Adjoining is the Civic Centre providing well thought out facilities  for 150 council staff, including showers, bike parking, and refreshment and welfare areas.

This move has meant that not only are each now able to offer better facilities, sharing many of the amenities, but their combined running and maintenance costs are also significantly lower.

Designed by _Space Group Architects of Leeds, construction was carried out by BAM Construction and fabricators on the project were Topside who assembled and installed the Reynaers Aluminium systems.

Reynaers Eco 50 and Eco 75 windows and doors were used throughout the project combining stylish aesthetic design with ease of installation. Being highly efficient, the systems meet the latest thermal insulation requirements, and so contribute significantly towards making reductions to the overall running costs.

With the requirement to keep areas of the building as light and airy as possible, a glazed facade was incorporated into the design with Reynaers high performance, sustainable CW50 curtain walling ideally suited and complementing the surrounding structure.

“When a project involves two different organisations coming together effectively under the same roof, it is important that the needs of each are met, without compromising the overall look of the building”, said Paul Duffy, Reynaers Sales Director. “The Selby Community Project has created a state-of-the-art building that meets all the requirements, whilst helping each to minimise their day to day costs and cutting their carbon footprint. It’s a fantastic building that will continue to serve the community well for a long time to come”.
