Pioneering design helps dementia sufferers

St Catherines View in Winchester opened in May 2012 – its design reflecting the latest thinking in dementia care.

The Colten Care home is set out in five house groups, each one catering for different levels of dementia and providing the right blend of calm and stimulation for each resident.

Thoughtful interior design is evident throughout, allowing the greatest possible independence for residents.  Colten Developments adopted the highest standards of building, fixtures and fittings throughout and Vicaima’s Classic Oak doors were integral to their design.  There are en-suite wet rooms in all bedrooms, and hydrotherapy spa baths in each of the five house groups.

A variety of themed rooms has also been carefully designed to inspire and stimulate residents.  They include a World Travel room where residents can reflect on where they have lived and travelled. There is also a Wildlife Hide room for viewing birds and other animals in the beautifully landscaped grounds.

Vicaima doors have been the natural choice for Colten Care homes for some time.  ‘We have been using Vicaima doors in our homes for the last 12 years, mainly due to their quality and finish’ says Harvey Baker, Purchasing Manager at Colten Care.  At St Catherines View Vicaima’s Classic Oak doors and Just White plywood flush doors have been used throughout.  Together these doors combine traditional elegance with a clean and fresh look throughout this innovative development.

Colten Developments and Colten Care have been building and managing care homes in the south of England since 1989 and this is their nineteenth care home.  Each one benefits from intuitive architecture, innovative building materials and elegant interior and exterior design.

St Catherines View was a finalist in the 2012 National Dementia Care Awards for Interior Design, which recognises environments that enable people with dementia to live as full, rewarding and safe lives as possible.  The home also won a 2012 New Homes Gardens Gold award for its ‘memory gardens’.
