Another industry first as Marley Eternit announces continued improvement

Leading roofing and cladding manufacturer Marley Eternit is celebrating, having achieved yet another industry first, with improved ratings on its UK manufactured fibre cement and profiled sheeting products as the result of its annual third party BES 6001 certification re-assessment.

BES 6001 is the ‘Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products’ by the BRE. And, so in demonstrating the company’s continued commitment to sustainable buildings, Marley Eternit’s UK manufactured clay tiles, fibre cement slates and profiled sheeting have achieved a ‘Very Good’ performance rating. This is an improvement from its ‘Good’ rating in 2012, meaning Marley Eternit’s products continue to lead the way in the roofing industry.

Gavin White, marketing project manager for Marley Eternit, said: “We are delighted that the latest assessment by the BRE has recognised our programme of continual improvements to the way we source, manufacture and supply our products and services. Last year we became the only roofing manufacturer in the UK to achieve independent carbon footprint certificate from the Carbon Trust, so this new accomplishment further adds to our wealth of market leading sustainability credentials.

“Using products that are responsibly sourced allows specifiers to deliver projects that achieve a higher number of credits within the BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes certification schemes. The three credits gained through the use of our BRE ‘Green Guide to Specification’ generic A+ rated clay and fibre cement slates is now enhanced with the additional three points available for demonstrating a ‘Very Good’ rating for responsible sourcing.

“The next few years will be very important in establishing responsible sourcing as a key criteria in product selection for construction projects and Marley Eternit intends to continue to lead the way in this important area – one that will come under increasing scrutiny.”

BES 6001 certification enables Marley Eternit to demonstrate a responsible chain of custody as a manufacture. Marley Eternit’s own organisational management systems as well as those of its supply chain have been assessed. The manufacturer’s environmental and social impacts have also been reviewed where for example its efforts towards monitoring and reducing carbon emissions and reducing transports impacts have been noted.

Furthermore, Marley Eternit’s responsible and sustainable employment policies and their involvement with local communities have also been recognised through this accolade.

Gavin concluded: “The accreditation improvement means architects, specifiers and contractors using Marley Eternit products can have total confidence that our processes, quality systems, and production methods conform to the highest standards of responsible souring. We are proud of our record in this area and intend to publish information about our commitment to critical areas such waste reduction in a forthcoming stakeholder report which will be available on our website.”
