When Lee Valley White Water Centre opened its doors for the Olympic canoe and kayak slalom events last July those doors were Reynaers Aluminium Vision 50, designed for the highest levels of performance.
Merging effortlessly within the tranquil setting of Lee Valley Regional Park, the Centre sits alongside the main lake overlooking the slalom courses, the largest of which is 300 metre long with a testing 5.5 metre descent of fast flowing, white water.
In order to provide uninterrupted views across the venue FaulknerBrowns Architects, who specialise in work for the sports and leisure sector, designed a building that readily opens up with runs of Reynaers high insulation CW50-HI curtain walling looking out onto an expansive viewing deck. Access to the deck is via Vision 50 doors , in double door configuration, as is the main entrance and ground floor access points. CS68 tilt & turn windows are fitted throughout for enhanced ventilation.
Offering the optimum combination of high insulation levels and optimal safety, Reynaers CS68, three-chamber, thermally insulated windows provide superior wind and water tightness. The Vision 50 doors are suitable for all installations where high volumes of usage are a necessity such as sports stadia, shopping centres, terminal buildings etc.
Designed to provide all the necessary facilities for the venue, the centre’s building contains a reception, café, changing rooms, shop, offices, spectator viewing areas, equipment storage and water pump/filtration plant.
During the Olympics the centre had temporary seating for 12,000 spectators and provided all the facilities for the international teams. Post Games it continues as an international, state-of-the-art facility for canoe and kayak slalom training and competition. In fact, it will host the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in 2015. The centre is fully open for white water rafting with demanding events for enthusiasts as well ‘fun’ events for users of all abilities, as part of the post Games legacy programme.
