Architects and developers are facing increasing demands to deliver sustainable projects that meet the strict environmental criteria of modern public sector constructions.
Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), non-recycled materials and inefficient insulation are just a few of the factors that can hinder the green credentials of any new-build floor.
To counter this problem the flooring specialists Flowcrete invested a lot of time, energy and resources into creating the Green Floorzone. This flooring solution provides every layer of a floor in one sustainable and environmentally friendly package, and allows specifiers to meet difficult green construction ratings such as BREEAM.
Each element of a floor’s lifecycle was measured and new technologies developed to provide the UK construction industry with a complete flooring solution that has the principles of sustainability at its core. Alongside this the Green Floorzone simultaneously simplifies project management, as it is all sourced from a single manufacturer and covered under a single warranty.
This solution covers everything from the substrate to the floor finish, with multiple options to choose from that allows developers the freedom to pick and choose the ideal solution for their project. Underfloor heating and insulation layers can be included to add extra operational benefits to the finished floor.
The wide array of decorative, hard wearing floor finishes available are made from up to 60% recycled content, and the sub-floor screeds are both OPC free and made from up to 40% recycled and natural raw materials.
To provide further benefits developers can choose to include the Isowarm Tackerboard underfloor heating system, which is able to deliver efficiency savings of up to 30% compared to conventional heating systems.
Noise transfer around the building can also be reduced with the addition of an Isocrete Acoustic Foam insulation layer. Created from recycled material, this system exceeded the building regulation’s standard for sound performance.
The college was particularly impressed with the economic, environmental and energy savings that the Isowarm system could deliver and specified a Flowcrete screed, underfloor heating system and finish for 2,000m² of the main curved atria and stairwells. The entire installation took only 3 weekends and because Flowfast Terrosso was chosen to finish the floor it meant that the entire Floorzone was trafficable just 2 hours after application had finished.
Flowcrete’s ability to provide the entire Floorzone was a key factor in the Stirling Sports Village’s decision to install over 3,000m² of its solutions. The £27m new-build sporting development wanted to ensure that its floor would be sustainable whilst also providing the necessary functionality and durability.
The floor consisted of Isocrete K-Screed and Isowarm underfloor heating with Flowfast Quartz and Flowfast SF41 being used for the finish. This configuration of flooring products provided a surface ideal for standing up to the continuous foot traffic in the main concourse areas, whilst also eliminating ponding water in the changing area. The Isowarm system was included so that the building managers could deliver controllable heat where it was needed.
One of the most environmentally friendly floor finishes in the Green Floorzone range is the seamless terrazzo Mondéco Mirrazzo, which contains 60% recycled glass and metal particles that creates a shimmering, stylish effect.
Doncaster’s Civic Offices recently installed this system and Flowcrete transported the material to the site in large, recyclable, bulk containers to reduce waste packaging. This is a great example of how Flowcrete’s commitment to the environment extends beyond the manufacturing of the products and into every aspect of the installation process.
Public sector projects across the country are increasingly utilising Flowcrete’s Green Floorzone for the flexible choice of options it offers combined with the fact that the end result will provide them with maximum functionality whilst minimising environmental impacts.
