Bamboo is the perfect material for interior flooring

For interior flooring projects, bamboo may not be the first material that comes to mind.  However, its exceptional performance, aesthetic and environmental attributes make it a strong alternative to traditional wood.  One of the leading UK distributors of bamboo flooring is Moso Bamboo Surfaces sole UK distributor of Moso bamboo products and can also provide expert design, product and installation advice, and has in-house capability to re-manufacture any bamboo product for bespoke design and applications.  The company stocks one of the widest ranges of traditional engineered bamboo and other bamboo flooring types.

Bamboo panels are made by splitting carefully selected bamboo stems into strips, which are first treated against mould and insects and then steamed to caramelise the sugars which results in a beautiful natural caramel colour.  The strips are then heat pressed and glued into panels.  To make into panels, strips can be connected in a number of ways; plain pressed, side pressed, or density/strand woven, depending upon the required finished look.  Panels are then ready to use in a wide variety of ways, flooring and internal cladding being the most common, but this versatile material is also used to make kitchen and bathroom units, furniture and doors.  If the bamboo is additionally heat thermally treated, it can be used for external landscaping projects such as decking or exterior cladding.

The performance of bamboo is equal to any real wood or wood veneer, and in the case of the strand woven or density type, it is in fact harder than the best tropical hardwood species, thus making it the perfect choice for areas of heavy traffic – domestic or commercial.

Bamboo flooring is exceptionally good looking and durable, and offers a wide variety of styles, sizes and finishes.  For instance, longer length and wider boards are available using three layers of solid bamboo to maximise stability.  If a seamless surface is required, choose a 2-ply tongue and grooved system, or if ease of fixing is important, there is a choice of Uniclic system types which is constructed to provide great stability and easy installation.  Moso flooring is exceptionally versatile and answers most design requirements.  For instance, Unibamboo combines the benefits of vinyl with the charm of bamboo flooring, where thin bamboo strips are pressed onto a latex backing, providing a flexible, light, sound-absorbing, low cost flooring solution.  Skirting boards and accessory strips are available for most flooring types.

In the fitting and maintenance of flooring, bamboo outperforms solid wood.  In the strand woven/density type, its composition is made up of individual strips of bamboo which are compressed under extreme pressure and then cross pressed to achieve great hardness and density.  As a result of this treatment, bamboo is less susceptible to shrink, warp and swell than solid wood species, thus providing a much more stable floor.  It is also anti-static, which if used in flooring projects where electrical components such as computers are present, the damage and danger from static is considerably reduced.  Bamboo can also help to facilitate a healthy indoor environment as it has anti-allergenic properties, which can make a difference where large numbers of people gather.  Any product used in the design or construction of buildings which have anti-allergenic properties, should consider bamboo as a preferred material choice.

Environmentally, bamboo outperforms wood every time.  Moso bamboo is probably the most environmentally friendly and sustainable species in the world, due to its harvesting and production processes which are carried out to the highest standards of environmental and manufacturing control.  The species of bamboo used is exceptionally fast growing, therefore making it non-viable as a food source for Panda’s which graze off low, slow-growing varieties.

Leading manufacturers Moso produces top quality products that meet the highest technical, functional and aesthetic requirements and provides a product guarantee of up to 30 years.  Products are made in production facilities that are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, thus meeting the most stringent requirements for quality, human wellbeing, safety and the environment.

Bamboo from Moso is the only bamboo company which has full carbon footprint and LCA certification which guarantees that all its products are carbon neutral (or better) over their full life cycle.  If these products are used in ‘green premium’ projects, they will contribute to a higher score in the leading sustainable building certification systems LEED and BREEAM.
