UK hard landscaping manufacturer Marshalls has launched a brand new series of paving sub-base designs aimed at simplifying the design process for its customers.
In collaboration with a leading industry expert, Marshalls has created new designs which go beyond the series of British Standards. In addition, to make the design process even simpler, Marshalls has developed a free online design tool which creates technical drawings based on site and application data supplied by the customer.
Based on years of its own in-house experience as well as feedback from its customers, Marshalls became aware that some designs within the British Standard series were over engineered, resulting in deeper and more expensive constructions than necessary. In addition, its experience suggested that in some cases the BS designs were not robust enough and resulted in ongoing maintenance issues.
Working closely with world-renowned structural engineer Professor John Knapton, Marshalls went back to first principles to re-calculate the ideal sub-base designs for each of its products including block paving, flags and natural stone slabs. This process employed a combination of finite element analysis, in-situ testing and years of combined experience to create a new suite of designs.
Professor Knapton said: “As part of this project I considered the need for new loading categories which better reflect modern usage patterns. The Marshalls approach now recognises eleven loading categories compared to the six offered by the BS, meaning that new designs can be even more prescriptive than before ensuring the most appropriate design for the intended application.
Knapton concluded: “When used in conjunction with individual products within the broad Marshalls range, the new designs will result in longer-lasting and lower maintenance pavements which are, crucially, as cost effective as possible.”
