Trend’s IQ®VISION is put centre stage at ExCeL London

As one of the capital’s most prestigious events venues, monitoring and managing energy use and comfort conditions at ExCeL London is vital, which is why it chose to install Trend’s IQ®VISION.

Located at the Royal Victoria Dock, when it opened in November 2000 ExCeL London became one of Europe’s largest regeneration projects. In 2019 alone it will play host to over 400 events, welcoming four million visitors to a diverse range of world leading exhibitions, corporate events and association meetings. With over 100,000m2 of multipurpose space, ExCeL London has a defined sustainability agenda and aims to continuously evolve and implement practices that deliver economic security, social and environmental benefits. This effort has been recognised with the Carbon Saver Gold Standard Award, alongside the Decade of Achievement Award for consistently reducing emissions over the last 10 years.

Management decision

As part of its policy of ensuring that its plant and building services infrastructure operates as efficiently as possible, a Trend building energy management system (BEMS) was installed to replace the existing Sauter system in the phase-1 building at ExCeL London. As part of the project, a Trend 963 Supervisor was installed, which provided a human interface to the phase-1 building initially and then the phase-2 building once complete. Following integration of the phase-1 and phase-2 buildings, the entire BEMS was connected to the ExCeL Local Area Network (LAN), providing network security and the ability for authorised users connected to the LAN to use certain 863 Supervisor functions remotely.

The 963 Supervisor had served the building well for many years. However, it was relatively old technology and, with such a large area to cover, the management team wanted to allow their team to be able to highlight and investigate energy use and comfort conditions via their Apple iPhones. The 963 Supervisor did not have this functionality, due to limited support of the Java applet. We therefore realised that the time had come to change, so invited Concord in to advise us on the next step.’

West Midlands based Concord is a longstanding Trend Technology Centre (TTC) and Mark Dodds, a project manager for the company, says,

‘We are proud to be one of a select group of TTCs, which means we have a high level of expertise in specifying, configuring and maintaining BEMS. Our expert engineers always look forward to getting their teeth stuck into any new product developments in order to deliver future proof solutions that offer maximum benefit.’

Seeing is believing

Concord has enthusiastically championed IQ®VISION and the company immediately recognised the benefits that ExCeL London could experience by upgrading its 963 Supervisor.

Steve Browning, Trend’s partner and end customer marketing communications manager, states,

‘Packed with features that allow end users to get the very best from their BEMS, the next generation IQ®VISION integrates Trend controllers, third party smart devices and internet protocols into a centralised software platform that is designed to manage buildings at an enterprise level, and give building owners and managers the ability to identify issues and optimise their systems.’

IQ®VISION provides graphical information to standard internet browsers and boasts a diverse range of useful functions such as centralised data logging, archiving, alarming, trending, master scheduling, system wide database management, and integration with enterprise software applications. They can then highlight and investigate energy use, create perfect comfort conditions, and be made aware of any plant based operational issues before they affect occupants.

Form and function

IQ®VISION is configured using the state-of-the-art Niagara 4 interface, which as well as being bold, intuitive and easy to use, utilises HTML5 to provide an array of rich features that are perfectly in tune with the demands of the internet of things (IoT). This HTML5 functionality means that the Excel London team can now view their BEMS schematics clearly via their Apple devices.

Asked how easy it is to work with IQ®VISION, Richard Ford, Director at Concord replies,

‘Our engineers believe IQ®VISION is a far superior package, which is actually more logical to configure than the 963 Supervisor. Obviously we had a learning curve to go through, however, as with most Trend products there is a fairly simple transition process.’

IQ®VISION includes integrated network management tools that support the design, configuration, installation and maintenance of interoperable networks, where multiple Trend IQ® controllers can be networked together. Third party device integration using open standard protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, MBUS and KNX is also possible.
