Regeneration Specialist Forms New Partnership

Regeneration Specialist Forms New Partnership

A leading regeneration and housing specialist has formed a new partnership to support the development of 2,300 homes in South Yorkshire.

Sheffield Housing Company (SHC) has appointed Esh Construction to deliver a development at Parson Cross which has a construction value of £5.4 million.

A collection of 44 two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes will be built at three sites located on Buchanan Road, Lytton Road, and Lytton Crescent. The properties, which are currently proposed for private sale, will help revitalise underused land, which has been vacant for nearly 20 years, following the demolition of old housing stock.

Steve Birch, Interim Project Manager at SHC, said: “It is great to forge new working relationships to help drive and deliver projects, as our programme of work increases.   Esh Construction is well placed to create these developments with significant skills and expertise in this area.”

Stuart Leslie, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract and to be working with Sheffield Housing Company for the first time. This contract also marks the largest scheme Esh has won to date via the YORbuild2 framework, which is a fantastic achievement for us.

“We will maximise the social and economic benefit for the community by supporting local initiatives, employing local and buying local – a core value which is very much aligned to that of Sheffield Housing Company.”

In addition to the new homes, Esh Construction will construct associated access roads, footpaths, parking, and landscape works.

Work will start in late June, with the first properties expected to be completed at the beginning of 2022. The project is part of a wider programme of regeneration led by Sheffield Housing Company and represents the fourth phase of development which will see around 300 homes built in the next four years.

Established in 2011, SHC is a joint venture originally established by Sheffield City Council, private sector construction partner Keepmoat Homes and Great Places Housing Group.  Since then, ENGIE and Sigma Capital have also partnered SHC to deliver homes for sale, private and affordable rent.

Councillor Paul Wood, Executive Member for Housing, Roads and Waste Management at Sheffield City Council said: “This is another important step in Sheffield’s journey towards providing much needed new homes for Sheffield families. We’re very pleased to see these plans for this area of the city and it’s so good to see that currently underused land will be used for this development.”

SHC has built almost 1,000 properties, of which around 8% are for affordable rent, delivered by Great Places; 20% are private rent, through Simple Life – part of Sigma Capital Group plc – and the remainder are for private sale.

The company’s entire development programme is currently benefitting from over £3m in funding from Homes England and £1.5m from Sheffield City Region.

About Sheffield Housing Company

The work of Sheffield Housing Company, Sheffield City Council’s joint venture housing delivery vehicle, forms part of the council’s ambitions to provide new housing stock in the city, that will support strong neighbourhoods, boost regeneration and help people feel safe, warm and well. The council is committed to creating balanced communities which is a priority for the council and City Housing Strategy so, alongside SHC, which was set up to build homes predominantly for open market sale, the council is also building and acquiring 3,100 new affordable homes as part of its own Stock Increase Programme. For further details of how the Council will deliver the type and volume of new housing required in Sheffield both directly, through its own build programme and indirectly, through its work with private developers, please access its New Homes Delivery Plan.

SHC was set up by the council as part of a competitive procurement exercise to bring back into use vacant land that once had Council housing with the aim to bring about the wider regeneration of these areas, creating successful and vibrant places to live with much needed new homes for sale to improve the quality and choice of new homes in these areas and an improved quality of life for residents. Working with our partners (Keepmoat and Great Places) we have invested more than £80 million in the local economy, created 75 apprenticeships and sustained around 800 jobs.
