CCC says UK must use more timber

By TTF CEO David Hopkins

In their Progress Report to Parliament, the Climate Change Committee (CCC) has once again recommended the UK Government substantially increase the use of timber in construction to help us achieve our net-zero ambitions.

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) in their Progress Report to Parliament has criticised the UK Government for failing to support “important statements of ambition” on decarbonisation with “firm policies” – and finding most sectors unprepared to take on the pace of change required to meet climate targets.

They have again recommended the Government ‘implement policies to drive more resource-efficient construction and use of existing low-carbon construction materials, including a substantial increase in the use of timber in construction.’ This has been a repeated call, but the policies which would support more wood; like those we recommend with the Confederation of Timber Industries ‘Net Zero Now: Why wait for the future’ policy briefing, are still to be implemented.

Regulating embodied carbon, a coherent retrofit policy, and encouraging the use of low-carbon sustainable construction through Government procurement are going to be important tools for taking on the climate challenge and changing the way we build in the UK. There are many organisations who think the same thing, such as the Construction Leadership Council with their National Retrofit Strategy, RIBA with their 2030 Climate Challenge, and ACAN in their report and campaign to Regulate Embodied Carbon.

Despite the widespread industry support and acknowledgement, getting policies into Parliament is a time intensive process. With the reformation of the APPG for the Timber Industries we will be seeking to build a powerful tool to advance the interests of timber construction, and help move these policies forward. Many thanks to all those who have written to their MP, and if you are yet to, I encourage you to do so using the letter template we have provided.
