Preserving the Past and Protecting the Future
Lime is fast becoming the building material of choice in conservation, heritage and new build projects where sustainability is high on the agenda. Lime has a carbon-neutral life cycle, being made from renewable materials that absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere whilst it’s curing, it can be recycled after use and the carbon footprint in manufacture is considerably lower than other modern products – sometimes by 75% – 90%.
Lime is the perfect partner for low-energy sustainable materials such as water reeds, straw, coppiced timber, earth and clay and when combined with other green materials, it provides excellent thermal performance.
Of course lime mortar isn’t just about sustainability, it has a wealth of key attributes that makes it so popular with architects and contractors alike. It is breathable, so doesn’t trap moisture inside the building envelope and it is also flexible so it will expand and contract according to prevailing conditions. This flexibility has a cost saving benefit as it alleviates the need for expansion joints which add to the cost of a build.
Lime mortar is highly aesthetic and can be exact colour-matched to bricks or other adjacent materials making it a good choice for conservation or new build.
