With a new year comes new interiors trends set to influence the direction of home design and – as a result – how we live. If the word ‘trend’ feels a little temporary, this doesn’t have to be the case. A trend doesn’t have to be fleeting, rather it speaks to how a particular style evolves over time.

Playfulism
Interiors just got fun. Danish design is known for elegant functionality but also has a playful side. ‘Playfulism’ taps into the trend landscape of joy-inducing dopamine design, hedonistic refinement and design as art.
So how does it play out? ‘Playfulism’ is a design ethos that’s defined by uplifting and unexpected colour combinations, eclectic textures and anti-structural shapes. For an instant playful hit, consider the power of a curved accent chair in a bold hue, like the Bolzano Swivel that brings with it the added thrill of taking a spin. Exaggerated, sculptural shapes bring artistic flair to a space, like BIG’s Nawabari pouffes, whilst also enhancing social interactions.

Think also about what WGSN is calling ‘FUNctional basics’. That is flexible designs that elevate the everyday and bring a sense of fun to daily rituals. Colloquially referred to as “the pizza table” (thanks to its segmented design) by Collections and Visuals Director Claus Ditlev Jensen, the Chiva coffee table is an organisational dream but will also facilitate the most stylish TV dinner. For super easy playful wins, throw colourful new cushions at your sofa or zone out a new area with a statement rug.

Get inspired by stars of design from previous decades. Heritage-inspired designs with bold, unexpected details and vibrant colour choices create contemporary products that feel familiar and fresh at the same time.
Salamanca sofa
The 1970s revival gathers pace but it’s boosted with a forward-thinking approach that takes in how we want to live now. Take the oversized, low-slung shape of the Salamanca sofa that radiates that seventies feel in its shape but also the overwhelming desire to lounge on it. Borrowing from ’60s and ’70s culture, cocktail hour is making a comeback with amped-up cocktail corners facilitated by the likes of the luxe Santiago Sideboard with retro drop-down bar and backlit glass shelves.
Archive designs see iconic pieces being brought back to life, like the Seoul chair inspired by its mid-century predecessors that Ditlev Jensen says “perfectly encapsulate the essence of our Danish design heritage”. Grounded in principles of simplicity, craftsmanship and quality materials, its clean lines, understated elegance, and attention to detail pay homage to the timeless design traditions that have defined Danish design for generations – yet with a modern and contemporary touch.

Statement minimalism
With this trend, pared back interiors take a fresh approach with unexpected details, bold functionality and design flair. Think minimalism that packs an extra style punch. A thoughtful approach to colour and texture underlines this direction with statement shapes and enticing textures coming to the fore.
With its channel stitching and plump proportions, the Bellagio sofa offers a tactile experience and makes a big style statement. Its designer Anders Nørgaard describes Bellagio as “one big statement piece with the power to command a room”. But it’s not all about looks. “When you look at Bellagio, it looks so comfortable”, adds Nørgaard. “It’s like sitting in the clouds.”
The Indivi sofa with a rounded end module makes for a more dynamic lounging experience, while the combination of materials in the mid-century-inspired Santiago Sideboard affords it a glamorous, luxe feel. For something undoubtedly minimalist but with sculptural, organic qualities, “the Tivoli coffee table’s eye-catching design adds a stylish edge to any space”, says Ditlev Jensen. “The boldness lies not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in its ability to transform and elevate the ambience of any space.” This sums up the statement minimalism trend nicely.
