After a busy year and festive season, it’s the perfect time to consider a refresh of your home for the year ahead. Taking time in January to look at and evaluate our spaces can be done in a number of ways – from decluttering and organisation to adding personal touches and new zones to your home.

Refresh your colour palette
“If you want to instantly change the look and feel of a room – add colour”, says BoConcept Copenhagen’s Interior Designer, Signe Nielsen.
“Whether you paint a wall or choose an accent colour by adding cushions or blankets to your sofa, you can create a whole new atmosphere for your space.”
Colours have the ability to evoke different emotions and energies, which can significantly impact our mood and the feel of a room. Bright shades can infuse energy and excitement, while softer shades can bring a sense of calm and relaxation. Create a home bar
Yes, you might be observing Dry January but it’s worth considering upping your hosting game in 2025 with a home bar. Inspired by iconic mid-century designs, the Santiago sideboard is a striking statement piece that was born for entertaining. “It embodies elegance with a contemporary twist, drawing inspiration from traditional Danish craftsmanship”, says Collections and Visuals Director Claus Ditlev Jensen. Consider creating ‘seating pockets’ – small areas of seating that promote conversation amongst your guests that extend beyond the dining table.
“Incorporating comfortable accent chairs strategically around the space can create cosy, inviting areas for conversation and relaxation”, says Anna Franzisca Gaier, BoConcept Interior Designer based in Augsberg, Germany.
Another thing to consider is side tables. You’ll need flexible furniture to move around the space. Nothing worse than having to put your glass of wine on the floor!”

The accent chair is having a moment thanks to its singular design appeal and ability to transform a room in one easy step.
“Accent chairs contribute so much to a room’s character and style”, says Gaier.
“Beyond its functional role, a well-chosen accent chair defines the room’s style, adding a unique element to the space.”
Gaier suggests choosing a shape that adds visual interest:

“whether it’s a striking design or a classic form It should enhance the room’s look. “For cocooning comfort try the Bolzano, or if you prefer straighter lines, Modena is a stylishly comfortable option.”
With the addition of a rug and a side table, an accent chair can help to create an entirely new zone in your home, too, like a reading nook.
“A well-designed reading corner offers several benefits for your space, including relaxation, opportunity for reading or family time, plus it can elevate the overall aesthetics of your interior”, says Nielsen.
Style your book shelves
Looking to refresh your bookshelves? Open systems such as Como and Calgary let your books be part of your decoration. Accessories such as a vase or sculpture in natural stone travertine will add an organic touch to your display.
Sometimes the small details and accessories can create a new atmosphere in your home. “Try removing everything from your bookshelves, be critical and select only the items and books that mean something to you or that have an aesthetic appeal and complements your interior”, says Nielsen.
Remember that getting rid of “stuff”, creates space for new items.

“Declutter and create a different layout than before” says Nielsen. “Leave some empty spaces in your bookshelves to put focus on the selected items you have picked. Plus a plant is always a good idea.”
Pick a pouffe
Don’t underestimate the power of a pouffe or footstool to impact your space – adding design flair as well as additional seating. They are a versatile and extremely mobile option to add comfort and style to your living space.
Nawabari, designed in collaboration with BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, doubles up as a piece of art for your space, while Eden will comfortably fit underneath the coffee table to save on space. You can style your footstool like a coffee table and add books or magazines to display.
“Even in the smallest of living rooms, there is always space for an Ottoman,” says James Miller, Senior Interior Designer at BoConcept, Newcastle (UK).
“The Xtra footstool is a personal favourite of mine. This stylish cube transforms any space into a spare bedroom as well as offering an extra seat if you are ever hosting extra guests.”
