Awareness of the issue is there, but even now, vital information about construction products is too often scattered, outdated, or locked away in silos. This fragmentation slows progress, produces costly errors, and stifles innovation. The solution isn’t simply to tick more boxes or to download more digital tools; it demands a fundamental cultural shift towards shared standards and genuine cross-industry collaboration. This is where Digital Product Passports (DPPs) come in; they’re set to transform how we track and trust the huge amounts of data linked to the materials we use.
Beyond compliance: the competitive edge of DPPs
So, what exactly is a DPP? Simply put, it’s a structured digital dataset that follows a product throughout its entire life-cycle. Imagine scanning a QR code and instantly accessing vital product information, such as who made it, how it performs, what standards it meets, and its environmental impact. This is about more than meeting regulations; it’s about allowing everyone in the supply chain – from designers and contractors to regulators and building owners – to make quicker, more informed decisions.
Looking across the Channel, the European Union’s Construction Products Regulation (CPR) 2024 is making DPPs mandatory for key product categories like concrete, steel, and insulation. Soon, manufacturers will be obliged to provide comprehensive digital documentation covering everything from technical specifications to carbon footprints and guidance on recycling.
Ignoring this regulation could prove to be a costly mistake. A significant volume of construction products move between the UK and Europe, making alignment with EU data standards more than just a ‘nice-to-have’. Closer to home, the ongoing Construction Products Reform Green Paper consultation suggests the UK may soon follow suit. To stay competitive and maintain access to vital EU markets, manufacturers will need to start preparing rigorously for DPPs.

The real value of DPPs lies in their ability to smash through the data silos that have too long plagued our industry. Even today, essential product data often gets stuck on static PDFs, submerged in detached databases, or even left lingering in paper files. Project teams often create their own records, leading to inconsistent information and compatibility nightmares. This fragmentation causes endless headaches: manual data-entry errors, inconsistent product specifications, and struggles to prove compliance. It also impedes our ability to track environmental performance and fully engage powerful digital tools like Building Information Modelling (BIM) and emerging AI technologies.
DPPs, built on shared, machine-readable standards, change all this. They enable information to flow seamlessly across the supply chain. A designer can instantly access verified, up-to-date data when specifying a product. Contractors get clear instructions and evidence of compliance. Asset managers gain the crucial insights needed for efficient building operation and maintenance. This unprecedented transparency doesn’t just cut down on errors and delays; it lays the foundation for a smarter, more sustainable future for construction.
A cultural shift: preparing for tomorrow
The construction industry is already taking steps in the right direction. Initiatives like the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) and platforms such as NBS Source are encouraging manufacturers to structure their data for digital use, making DPP creation simpler. Alignment with standards like EN 15804 for Environmental Product Declarations further supports transparent reporting of lifecycle impacts, pushing us towards a more circular economy.
However, getting ready for this digital future is about more than just updating IT systems. It demands a cultural shift towards openness, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Manufacturers need to audit their current data management processes, identify gaps, and play an active role in industry-wide standardisation schemes. Specifiers and contractors should demand high-quality, accessible product data and partner with companies who promise to deliver it. Ultimately, better data isn’t just about compliance; it’s a strategic asset and a powerful competitive advantage.
The move towards Digital Product Passports is a golden opportunity to solve construction’s most stubborn challenges. By embracing shared data standards and digital collaboration, we can reduce errors, boost efficiency, and unlock the full potential of new technologies.
