PAS 2080 certification rewards CRL’s carbon management leadership

CRL’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint has received official recognition in the form of PAS 2080 certification, the leading standard for carbon management in buildings and infrastructure.

The concrete refurbishment and asset maintenance specialist, which is celebrating 70 years in the sector, has long been an advocate of sustainable innovation and responsible operation. Achieving PAS 2080 certification is a testament to that enduring dedication.

Awarded by the independent standards body National Quality Assurance (NQA), the certification demonstrates CRL’s leadership in carbon management and its efforts to reduce environmental impacts. PAS 2080 is supported by industry-leading organisations, including National Highways, National Grid, and Anglian Water, and attaining the standard is becoming increasingly important for all members of the construction and infrastructure supply chain.

As part of its Carbon Reduction Plan, CRL is committed to achieving net-zero by 2045. This target encompasses operations across all seven of its UK offices.

Since formalising its environmental strategy, CRL has made significant progress in reducing its carbon footprint. Initiatives have included replacing fossil fuels with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil for the onsite plant and installing electric vehicle charging points at offices nationwide. These actions have contributed to a 19% reduction in Scope 1 emissions and a 30% reduction in Scope 2 emissions.

Plans for the companywide installation of solar PV panels and enhanced supply chain engagement to promote lower-carbon material use will be central to achieving CRL’s interim goals:

• Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035
• 50% reduction in absolute emissions by 2040
• Elimination of single-use plastics and a reduction of waste across all projects and offices

Founded in 1955 to repair wartime bomb damage in London, CRL has grown into a multi-disciplined contractor with a turnover of £65 million, delivering projects ranging from £5,000 to £15 million across the highways, water, rail, marine, nuclear, utilities, and built environment sectors.

A series of events is planned to commemorate the company’s 70th anniversary, including the planting of 70 trees across CRL’s UK and international sites. This initiative reflects the company’s sustainable ethos and aligns with its wider community engagement, such as woodland conservation projects supported through staff volunteering.
