Preserving an historic chapel

The City of London Cemetery Chapel, a Victorian gem with its rubblestone walls and distinctive fish-scale tiled roof, required a sensitive touch. DBR’s in-house masons and specialist roofing division, DBR Leadwork, collaborated over a 12-week period on this project. Their focus was on preserving the historic fabric whilst shoring up the structure, and also ensuring the chapel’s architectural character was retained for its continued ceremonial use by the Corporation of London. The work was a testament to regular, yet vital, conservation work that goes in to safeguarding our architectural heritage.

A monumental restoration

In contrast, the Cartwright Memorial presented a significant structural challenge. The monument to political reformer John Cartwright had been dismantled, and its underground vault was compromised. DBR was entrusted with its complete reinstatement over an eight-month period. The team worked closely with conservation consultants to devise a complex strategy. This involved rebuilding the vault’s base with traditional lime mortar and sourcing precisely matched Jordans Whitbed Portland stone for missing cladding.

The project’s complexity was most evident in the structural reinforcement of the vault. With original brickwork too degraded for reuse and coffins preventing standard propping techniques, DBR’s team deployed an innovative solution; drilling and installing five 1350mm Cintec anchors to secure the ceiling, with shorter anchors placed diagonally in the rear vault. The weathered obelisk, with illegible inscriptions, was replaced by faithful facsimile, restoring the monument’s commemorative purpose and ensuring its stability for generations to come.
