The issue of temperature management and adequate ventilation is high on the agenda. The largest UK-wide teachers’ union, the NASUWT, is pressing for new rules that would require schools to act if temperatures reached 24C.
Whilst schools are increasingly installing underfloor heating systems , Mike Lamb, Managing Director of Warmafloor, warns that more attention needs to be focused on ensuring that systems are put in place at construction phase to prevent buildings from overheating.
Many underfloor heating circuits can be supplied with cold water for summer cooling with minimal changes to the hydronic configuration. By circulating cool, rather than warm water, the floor can be cooled to offset high ambient temperatures and solar gains.
Research shows that radiant ceiling systems, widely used in Europe, can reduce cooling energy by 15% to 25%. Mike said; “With rising summertime temperatures and ambitious government CO2 targets, we need to better understand how sustainable building practices can not only work, but also work really well.”
